LEE REED & !KRYMEWON RUIN CHRISTMAS

December 18, 2021 by Alastair Hill

Crawling out from the rubble of our plague time indie music scene.. decorated HammerCity rap veterans Lee Reed & !KrymeWon surface for this early evening performance of face-scrunching, head-nodding, bombastic, bah-humbuggery.. to get ya right in your holiday-seasoned anti-capitalist feels. 2 heaping helpings like gramma did. That’s 2 full sets from Lee Reed & !KrymeWon + 2 DJ sets, menacingly curated and lovingly spun by !KrymeWon. No fuss. No muss. No host. No openers. Stoodis.

Hear new songs. Sing old songs. Have a seat. Have a snack.  Get up. Move that ass. Feel beats boom in your chest. Get yelled at. Yell back.  Be washed clean of the end time vibes in a giant fiery torrent of revolutionary rap catharsis. And still be home before midnight! Deck halls. Jangle balls. Batman smells. Kill the Scrooges.  Fa la la la la.

The People Under the Staircase is at 27 Dundurn Street North. Great selection of beers n ciders n drinks.. and excellent vegan pub food menu // as per Provincial COVID safety guidelines.. vax proof is required for entry, and guests are asked to mask up when not eating or drinking. Be kind. And make space for people // the main floor of the venue is wheelchair accessible but, the upstairs performance space is unfortunately not // this is a small, limited capacity performance space // The People Under The Staircase: (905) 529-3000 / https://peopleunderthestaircase.com/

Brownman’s HOLIDAY MADNESS (A Truly Insane Modern Jazz Christmas Concert)

December 17, 2021 by Alastair Hill

Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player Brownman Ali’s Jazz Christmas show is a unique reading of classic holiday tunes by the BROWNMAN AKOUSTIC 4-TET, which features a hand-picked cast of some of Toronto’s top-shelf jazz & studio musicians. Each year during the holidays Brownman specially arranges and re-orchestrates many of the quintessential archetypes of the season, with his own unique visions.
Imagine, if you will:
— “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman”, as a boom-bap hip-hop track
— “Frosty the Snowman” with a Cuban Songo twist
— “We Three Kings”, in 4, as an R’n’B tune
— “Rudolph” as a hard-swinging Coltrane tune
— “Jingle Bells” in 7/8, like Brubeck might have done it
— “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire” as a Brazilian Samba
— “Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” like a 50’s Miles tunes
— “Do You Hear What I Hear” as down-tempo soul
— “Silent Night” as a funk ballad
All these and more!
Holiday cheer interpreted and re-imagined by one of the nation’s most acclaimed modern jazz iconoclasts.’

Burner, Sea of Troubles, Banananananana & Succotash: Jazz for the Soul

December 10, 2021 by Alastair Hill

On December the 10th of the year 2021, strange sounds will emanate from the upstairs venue of the Staircase Cafe and Theatre. Behold:
BURNER. Noisy, rock n’ rollin’ hardcore which performs as the name advertises. Get burned.
SEA OF TROUBLES. A dramatic, jarring, frantic take on hardcore punk with notes of early 80’s, powerviolence, noise rock, sludge and melody-led alt rock. Chain punk for egg punks.
BANANANANANA. A grainy synth-punk VHS tape from your weird dreams. Where new wave and no wave shake hands and get spooky together. Purveyors of self-described slopcore. Cool beans. Members of Get Off the Cop, Lizzy Boredom, Concavity and Human Nun.
SUCCOTASH. Making their live debut is an exciting addition to Hamilton’s rich history of punky noise and noisy punk, featuring an excellent ensemble of heavy rockers providing a big tasty din with a side of HC. I’ve got a good feeling about it.
That’s the facts, kiddo. There is only one question: where will you be when the skronk goes down?
